New online baccarat games: rules, odds and how to manage your bankroll

Baccarat has the simplest decision at the casino: back the Banker, the Player or a Tie. The new variants mostly change speed, commission or add multipliers, and each change moves the house edge.

The Banker bet has the lowest house edge in standard baccarat. Side bets and Tie bets pay more but cost far more over time.

The bets and their cost

In standard punto banco with eight decks, the Banker bet pays even money minus a 5% commission and carries a house edge of about 1.06%. The Player bet pays even money at about 1.24%. A Tie paying 8:1 carries about 14.4%, which makes it one of the most expensive bets in the casino.

Standard punto banco
BetUsual payoutHouse edge (8 decks)
Banker1:1 minus 5% commissionabout 1.06%
Player1:1about 1.24%
Tie8:1about 14.4%

A worked example: NZ$1,000 staked on Banker costs about NZ$10.60 on average, the same amount on Tie about NZ$144. The difference comes from the payout the casino sets, not from luck.

New baccarat variants

  • Speed Baccarat: the same rules with shorter betting windows, so more hands per hour and faster losses at the same stake.
  • No Commission Baccarat: Banker wins are paid even money, except a winning Banker six, which usually pays half. Read the table rules for the exact exception.
  • Squeeze baccarat: the dealer reveals the cards slowly for suspense. The odds do not change.
  • Lightning Baccarat: random multipliers on some cards in exchange for a fee on every bet. The fee raises the cost of each hand.

Evolution and other live studios run most of these tables. Our baccarat page lists the new casinos that carry them.

Side bets

Side bets pay big but hit rarely. Common ones are Player Pair and Banker Pair, usually 11:1, and Perfect Pair, usually 25:1. Their house edge is much higher than the main bets, so keep them to a small fixed share of your stake if you play them at all.

Betting systems

Systems such as Martingale, Fibonacci or 1-3-2-4 change how you size bets. They do not change the house edge.

  • Martingale doubles the stake after each loss. Six losses in a row from a NZ$5 start already need a NZ$320 bet, and the table maximum can end the sequence before you recover.
  • Fibonacci steps up more slowly, so losses build more gently but recover more slowly too.
  • 1-3-2-4 raises the stake only after wins. Four wins in a row return 10 units; any loss resets to 1 unit.

If you use a system, decide your loss limit before the session and stop when you reach it.

Bankroll and bonuses

  • Split your budget into sessions and set a loss limit for each one.
  • Bet in units, for example NZ$2, so stakes stay proportional to your bankroll.
  • Play slower tables if you want your budget to last longer; speed variants burn through it faster.
  • Check bonus terms: many casinos count baccarat at 10% or less towards wagering, or exclude it.

Free demo tables are a sensible way to learn the variants before you stake real money. If playing stops being fun, see our responsible gaming page.

Questions

Baccarat: questions

What is the best bet in baccarat?

The Banker bet, with a house edge of about 1.06% in eight-deck punto banco, even after the 5% commission.

Is the Tie bet worth it?

At 8:1 the Tie bet has a house edge of about 14.4%. Some tables pay 9:1, which lowers it, but it stays far more expensive than Banker or Player.

Do betting systems work in baccarat?

No system changes the house edge. Systems only change how your stakes rise and fall, and doubling systems can hit the table maximum quickly.

Does baccarat count towards bonus wagering?

Often only partly, and sometimes not at all. Check the game weighting in the bonus terms before you play baccarat with a bonus active.

Can I practise baccarat for free?

Many casinos offer RNG baccarat in demo mode. Live dealer tables usually need a funded account.

Responsible gaming

Play only if you are 18+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

18+ only

Adults only, everywhere

You must be 18 or older, and older in some countries. A casino can ask for ID before your first withdrawal, and new casinos often do.
