A worked example: NZ$500 of bets cost about NZ$13.50 on average on a European wheel and about NZ$26.30 on an American one.
Roulette wheels differ by one pocket, and that pocket carries the cost. A European wheel has a single zero. An American wheel adds a double zero, which raises the casino's share of every spin.
French roulette uses the single-zero wheel with an extra rule. La partage returns half of an even-money stake when zero lands. Roulette with la partage has a house edge of 1.35% on even-money bets.
A straight-up bet pays 35:1. An even-money bet pays 1:1. Both carry a house edge of 2.7% on a single-zero wheel. The payout changes how often and how much you win, not what the table costs you.
The American wheel has one worse bet. The first-five line on a double-zero wheel has a house edge of 7.89%. Skip that bet if you meet it.
New formats at new casinos
- Multiplier roulette, such as Lightning or Quantum: random numbers get 50x to 500x, other straight-up wins pay less than 35:1.
- Double Ball: two balls per spin, with adjusted payouts.
- Auto and speed roulette: no dealer pauses, many more spins per hour.

Lightning Roulette straight-up bets pay 29:1, 50x–500x on lucky numbers. Evolution runs the best-known multiplier tables. Read the paytable before you bet, because the unmultiplied payout is lower than on a standard wheel.
Mini roulette uses 13 pockets, numbered 0 to 12. Mini roulette bets that avoid zero have a house edge of 3.85%. Mini roulette bets that cover zero have a house edge of 7.69%.
Roulette and bonuses
Roulette usually counts 10% or less towards bonus wagering, and some terms exclude it or ban betting on both red and black. Check the game weighting and the restricted betting patterns before you claim a bonus.
Roulette bonus terms are rarely generous. A bonus that counts roulette at 10% means a NZ$100 wager on red clears only NZ$10 of the requirement.
